What's for desert
I don't know if you guys know/care about the debate around the original "hipster headdress" (Native American-inspired feathers), but it's interesting to think about the idea of inspiration/appropriation derived from cultures with which we have a less-than-peaceful history. I have an opinion but I'm more interested in yours... Do share. Do you rock feather headdresses? Would you do this turban-inspired stuff above? Is it all just fun and fashion? Or something worthy of deeper considerataion?
P.S. Title of the post inspired by my We Heart It search for desert imagery, which took extra time due to hundreds of ice cream sundaes and fancy cakes [sigh].

i've always been fascinated by the native american headdresses. i think they're incredibly beautiful and even thought about purchasing one while i was at the arizona airport. i'd love to wear an authentic one, but just for fun. i think these head scarves are great as well - love the one worn by one of the olsens, but again to me it's just for fun.

I am seriously begining to want a turban-esque headdress for summer. Think they are ultra chic. But not sure they will suit me...!?
Was rocking a feather headband at the weekend to a wedding - loved it! (Photos on my blog - obv!)

Who's that in the very bottom, right corner? Looks like Keira Knightley :)

http://fayfriscolife.blogspot.com/2010/05/turban-dreams.html, This was my take on it,
But i love that you mentioned taking inspiration from the east, Im Middle eastern (lebanese), and have that Guttra courtesy of my grandfather who wore it on his head for as long as i can remember! I love it, and now seeing these images, Im inspired to somewhat pay a tribute to that, and style it in some modern way for the fun of it!
:)
I don't think I could pull it off!
I love the turbans! This collage is absolutely amazing!!!!!!!
xoxo
I definitely love the turban, the way that Erykah Badu wore it back in the day. I don't know how to tie it though, but I think it's beautiful.
Stunning!
I would absolutely *not* rock the hipster headdress. It's racist and offensive (and you've obviously done your research on this one), and I do have respect for Native American culture. The most important distinction between the appropriations of the war bonnet and the turban is that turbans are not generally culturally/spiritually significant. They have the very practical purpose of being something that people in the Middle East started wearing because it was good protection against wind and heat. War bonnets are a craft and an art, each one made with specific components that are significant to the individual, the tribe/culture, or ceremony/event.
I also think it's kind of dodgy to wear turbans, just like I thought it was kind of dodgy to wear keffiyehs. It's not outright racist, but given the general apathy that Americans have towards our "war on terrorism," it seems like the turbans are also a bit of a mockery. But you can't deny the fact that turbans have existed in mainstream American fashion before and I'm pretty sure we weren't engaged in a largely unpopular and unexplained war against turban-wearing countries. I still wouldn't wear it.
just uploaded an outfit of mine on your flickr group that was inspired by this post! :D
I admire the valuable information you offer in your articles. I will bookmark your blog and have my children check up here often. I am quite sure they will learn lots of new stuff here than anybody else!
