Making Fetch Happen: The One-Piece Swimsuit

I have a personal problem and it's actually quite serious: I cannot wear a bikini anymore because my stomach is totally messed up!  I don't mean this in a vain, honey-do-I-look-gross type of way; it's really a medical issue and I'm basically waiting to have surgery to have it fixed ... waiting until I know more crazy things aren't going to happen to undo the surgery.

Alas, I'm not really sad.  I still like my body; things happen to you as you go through the course of life, right?  My health is good and my internet connection works.  That's all that matters.

But that being said, I am going to use every power I have as a trend forecaster and blogger to MAKE FETCH HAPPEN with this one-piece swimsuit trend.  (Please don't talk to me about tankinis - I have one and people do double takes when I wear it - not in a good way.  The world at large doesn't favor tankinis, and I'm not going to try to talk them into it).

One-piece swimsuits are a one-way ticket to retro chic (right? right??), and will never make you feel funny when you throw some jean shorts over your suit and walk into Starbucks- because guess what?  You're now wearing a tank top and jean shorts. Also, for some reason, one pieces make me want to bust out jewelry and hats at the pool.  Are you guys feeling me?  PLEASE.

^^ SHOP IT ^^

Here are 6 of my favorite one-piece swimsuits:

1. Animal print one-piece, Free People $148 | 2. Pops of Print Maillot, Anthropologie $199.95 (was $368) | 3. Esmeralda Floral one-piece, Nasty Gal $88 | 4. Volcom Timelines one-piece, Alloy $64.90 (was $84) | 5. Ikat cut-out halter one-piece, Delia's $34.50 (also in solid black and other prints) | 6. Navy polkadot one-piece, Topshop $65

P.S.-> If you're in NYC come play at this Norma Kamali swimwear party - $35-$135 crazy prices!  And olive oil popcorn, hello.  RSVP here.

Would you wear a one-piece or are you all bikini, all the time?

I succumbed to the one piece last year after, quite frankly, I decided I was too fat for a bikini... and I loved it! there's something classy and super sexy about a one piece. And if you still want to go for skin on show. Go for a low cut back or serious boobage ;)

oh i forgot to add serious boobage is not an option. whomp whomp.

but love ya!

i've been considering a new one-piece too! there is something about them that makes you more unique in a crowd - it's not so much a cover-up as it is a statement.

I am DEFINITELY on board with you, girl. I love the look of a one piece - especially amidst a sea of bikinis. Rock it!

I'm definitely not a bikini girl! It's all about the tankini for me, but these cute one pieces might sway me back in that direction!

I do like the retro feel of certain one pieces. While I in no way think I have a perfect bikini body, I feel like they are almost more flattering. The best place to hide something is out in the open, right? In a one piece, I feel like my slightly jiggly bits (I'm not a big girl, just not 100% in shape) stand out more when they have fabric stretched across them.

The Redhead - I hear you, I think it's great to put your body on show - why not, it probably looks 100x better to the rest of the world than it does in our mirrors, right? In my case it's more protecting the world from being like ???? WHAT HAPPENED ???? and having to have a conversation, which is why I like the coverage : )

For sure! One pieces are totally fetch!
My black halterneck monroe one came this morning and instead of feeling slightly porny (as I do in a bikini) I feel glam and retro and family friendly! Perfect for poolside x

Sara - I want to seeee! (the bathing suit that is!)

could you find some one piece swimsuit with straight across boy cut legs...that's the holy grail for me.... :)

I haven't worn a two piece suit since I was a girl--too much skin (and now, cellulite) gets shown to the world! A year or two ago I got a beautiful Calvin Klein one piece suit in a dark indigo/purple color; it's sort of retro, but also very modern, and I feel pretty comfortable being seen in it :)

I hate to say it, but I have mixed feelings about one piece suits. On one hand, I am THRILLED that they have managed to come out with some really really attractive ones this year (and I love a retro/throwback type look - so glam when done right). I hope that they will still be there for me when I decide to transition over. So...on the other hand...I live in Florida and go to the beach almost every weekend. I feel chained to my bikinis; the thought of a white stomach terrifies me (tan lines are the enemy!!!)...but then again: I tan literally like the Coppertone baby; I take my bathing suit off and it literally looks like I'm wearing a white one underneath. TMI? You know what would be great? If there was a bathing suit material that you would tan right through...I'd buy that...and then wear a one piece. ;)

I am 100% a one-piece gal. I think I only wore bikinis once, when I was 16 (I had a sunflower print one and a white macrame one!). But other than that, I've always gravitated towards one pieces. Because they are just so much more chic!

A bikini can be cute, sexy and other things, but not really glamourous or chic. The one piece is like the evening gown of swim - Add a sheer caftan, a wide brim hat and killer shades (plus bangles and a necklace if you're slathering on the sunblock, which I assume you are), and you have an OUTFIT.

You picked a few of the bathing suits I've been stalking this summer too! Love the Anthropologie one! Might have to get it now that it's on sale!!

I'm all for one piece swimsuits. I think they are uber-flattering, have a seriously sexy retro vibe and there are some amazing pieces right now.. I'm particularly loving polka dot bathing suits :)

I am so sorry to hear that, and I hope your surgery goes well! However, one-piece suits are so hot. They make you stand out against all the bikini-clad girls. I have been wanting a monokini for the longest time, and I couldn't find any in stores! My cousin was nice enough to give me hers, and I love it much more than my bikinis. There's something sexy about leaving a little to the imagination. Plus, I think one-pieces are much more stylish than a bikini. I am sure you will look amazing!

Count me in! I've always preferred one-piece suits. They're just more flattering, plus less sunscreen to apply!
